This weekend GiG does jazz guitar on Friday evening and flamenco
guitar on Saturday.This
Bruce Dunlap is up on Friday. "Dunlap's music is dry, mildly
fruity... a petulant little number actually." Robert Mondavi "The
"war on terror" has created a culture of fear in America. Bruce's
sense of harmony scares me as well." Zbigniew Brzezinski
"Transcendent yet realistic ... [The music] sings the body acoustic
and is out of the cradle and endlessly rocking." Walt Whitman
"Reminds me of me, only louder." Emily Dickinson
Chuscales, after spending the summer performing in New York is in
rare form (rarer than usual even!) and brings his group to GiG
Saturday evening. Chusco is one of my favorite musicians, one of
flamencos great guitarists. Don't miss your chance to get close to
this guy. A true guiterrorist!

Bruce Dunlap - Solo
8PM
1808 Second Street
Price: Suggested Donation $10 - $15
"Bruce is one of those guys who has to be heard to be believed. One
of the most amazing guitarists I've ever heard, bar none. Very modern,
not retro at all. And he is the most relaxed player I think I've ever
seen. There's none of the "Wow, I'm playing a hard lick so I'm going
to pose and make faces" kind of vibe from him at all, it's more like
he's taking a lazy stroll in the park." Clay Moore
"This guy demonstrates an approach that takes advantage of the
harmonic and melodic possibilities the guitar can offer in the hands
of a master. Dunlap should be a legend of some sort, but he remains
almost unknown. [Scuse me!] Bruce displays all the gifts I look for,
skill, harmonic depth, melodic invention, dynamics, tone, soulfulness
and taste. He seems to have it all - single note chops that are as
developed as anyone, harmonic finesse and expertise and a command of
the polyphonic capabilities of the guitar that I have seldom, if ever
heard in the jazz realm. This is some of the most complete playing I
have heard - complete in terms of the command of melody, harmony and
rhythm in the context of the trio. His playing makes me think of John
Williams, but the jazz version!!!"
Richard Smith
"One player that comes to my mind as someone who sounds kind of like
he can physically do anything on the guitar, from blazing fast single
note lines to complex, effortless sounding contrapuntal improv, is
Bruce Dunlap. To me, that guy comes as close as I've ever heard to
having "perfect" technique for playing jazz guitar."
Tom Lippincott
"Bruce Dunlap, to me, is one of the guitarists who is approaching
what I think CAN be done with the guitar." Hak
"Acoustic jazz guitar played stunningly well... fascinating new
compositions." - Jim Hall

Chuscales, Guitar - Yiyi Orozco - Percussion - Meena, Dance
8PM - GiG - 1808 Second St
Price: Suggested Donation $10 - $15
Chuscales was born in Antequera, Spain in 1956 and grew up in the
midst of one of the most well-known gypsy families in Granada. He
started his career as a flamenco dancer, which has given him a
tremendous command of the various flamenco rhythms. Early in his
career, he switched to the guitar and since then has played
extensively as a soloist and as an accompanist for some of Spain's top
flamenco singers and dancers. Chuscales is one of the new generation
of flamenco guitarists, following in the footsteps of Paco de Lucia,
playing with an amazing technical ability and speed. He has toured
extensively throughout North and South America, Asia, and both Eastern
and Western Europe. He has accompanied Maria Benitez for the past five
years and is also presently performing as a solo concert guitarist.
Yiyi Orozco
The charismatic singer and percussionist, Yiyi Orozco, was raised in
a family of professional flamenco artists. A child prodigy, he was
already working as a flamenco percussionist by age 12. As a singer, he
toured Germany at age 18 with "Flamenco Rubio" and later performed
throughout Europe with companies such as Fernando Belmonte's "Ballet
Albarizuela" and Flamenco Alahama. In recent years he has accompanied
dancers such as Javier Baron, El Toleo, El Pelao, Maria Serrano, La
Tania and Antonio Granjeros and has been a featured musician in Maria
Benitez's Teatro Flamenco.
